So we hear the same story about how our students fare poorly in comparison to other nations in reading, science and math. Huge educational “initiatives” are launched to address the gap (“Common Core” anyone?). And then there’s this persistent messaging about getting everyone to go to college:
Education Secretary Arne Duncan called the results a “picture of educational stagnation.”
“We must invest in early education, raise academic standards, make college affordable, and do more to recruit and retain top-notch educators,” Duncan said.
What has “making college more affordable” got to do with the raising expectations (standards) and the need to recruit top notch educators? What about making teaching to the test a thing of the past?
